When I was pregnant with Stan, we bought a book called 40,001 Best Baby Names. It's the worst book ever. forty thousand is just too many. Lots of the names are just made up-these are the names whose 'origin' is listed as American ("Bronto (American) short for Brontosaurus). Others are rediculous misspellings of legitimate names (Dafnee gets its own listing apart from Daphne, Playtoh is separate from Plato, Antwanette for Antoinette), and still others are just cruel. For example, no one in this country should name a little boy Bonar. And who would name a little girl Curine? Any name that's just 'urine' with a letter tacked on to the front is going to cause grief to its bearer. Other names could work as a nickname but would be crippling as a legal name, such as Bruiser, Bubba, Bulldog, or Bumpus. these are all offered as legitimate first boy names on one page! Chili is offered as an American name meaning appetite for hot food. Choicey is American for picky. imagine the life of a boy named Poogie, or Prarie, or Prop, or Purvis. Now imagine a woman trying to get a serious job or break through the glass ceiling with a name like Cookie, or Bikini for crying out loud. Bootsie, Breezy, Buffy, Butter, Celery, Cherry, Chinadoll, Cinnamon, Cloud, Crispy....Fluffy? Femi? Other names you'd have to be a supermodel not to wish your life was over, such as Bagula. Oh, here's one. Let's name the girl Dijonaise--condiments; combo of Dijon and mayonaise. If the spelling is too obvious, there's also Deejonaise, Dijonais, Dijonaze, or simply Naise offered as alternative spellings. I hope no one is getting ideas.
